Bridal portraits have always been very popular in the US and they are becoming more popular here in the UK. Brides normally have their bridal portraits taken a few weeks before the big day. As an investment, they are a fantastic addition for you and your family. Of course, your wedding photographer will take some portraits of you on the day but more and more brides want something special to mark the occasion.
Hare are my “5 Tips: To why you should have your bridal portraits taken
1. Time is precious
Weddings are a force of nature, pressured and somewhat uncontrolled. They follow a very strict timeline that doesn’t always provide a relaxed moment for the bride. It is so important that your wedding photographer sticks to the plan so that things stay on schedule. This normally means your wedding photographer is going to be rushing around trying to capture your shot list. Having a bridal portrait taken before the wedding means your wedding photographer can spend more time on the day and will be able to take more time, tons of photos and give you more options to choose from.
2. Testing, Testing 123
A bridal photography shoot can be used as a test run for the big day. It’s a great opportunity to perfect the entire ensemble, such as the dress, hair and makeup and accessories. You can make adjustments before the actual wedding. It’s also a great opportunity to test the bouquet as well. Have your florist make a mock bouquet for you to use during the portrait sessions, that way you can make sure it’s exactly what you wanted.
3. Be Flexible
Having your bridal portraits before the wedding means you can experiment and be more adventurous with your locations. On your wedding day your photographer is limited to the venue and can’t be as creative as they’ll try and isolate you from the background or guests before the wedding commences. If you have your bridal portraits taken then the venue is empty and you can begin to experiment, maybe even move locations altogether and set yourself in the woods or any idyllic scene.
4. Be More Comfortable
The biggest reason to have your bridal portraits taken is that you are under no pressure to perform! You will feel no stress or obligations to freeze for family member “snap shots”. Practice your wedding poses, enjoy the quiet and freedom to express yourself.
5. Your Receptions Focal Point
If you have your bridal portraits taken before your wedding then you will have the opportunity to display them at your reception. Your guests will love it.
“When should I have my bridal portraits taken” – You should aim to have them 3-4 weeks before your wedding. That way most of your wedding dress alterations should have been completed and it gives you time to get the images printed.
“Where should I have the portraits taken” – If possible have them taken at the final venue so that they are relevant to your big day, however you could be adventurous and have them taken somewhere more daring.
“Should I have the bouquet” – I think this is a great idea as it would allow you to make sure it feels right on the big day and it will help tie in the images.
“How large should I get the images printed” – I think 16 x 20 is a great size. It’s large enough to grab attention without being over the top.
