We like to think that the best possible results in child portraits happen when you just let children get on with things. That’s why we love these natural portraits with Ava and Lucas who allowed us into their home to experience what they’re all about. We’ve chosen some of our favourite images from our shoot to go into a little more detail.
Lets start with our absolute favourite from the shoot. We’ve called this image Playdoh Pizza because as soon as we walked in the door, Ava & Lucas made us feel at home with free food! Albeit inedible food. The image tells us a story about two siblings spending time together doing what they enjoy. The processing of the image concentrates the feeling that nothing else is important at this time with no distractions and we are left just silently watching.
Once you get to know children, something pretty great happens. You become part of their little world and they start to trust your opinion and give you their ideas. That’s why we chose this as our second favourite image. Ava wanted a picture of her holding a red rose, for no other reason than she felt it would be cool to have. She decided where to stand and how to pose while we chose to zoom out so we can see some of the great influences that surround her such as the plethora of books.
There’s something very special about this image and it has absolutely nothing to do with us. Notice Ava’s eyes peeking over the top of the book and you can just hear her thoughts “please sit still Lucas, I’m trying to read!” It’s a look that all parents see at some point and one that speaks volumes. We love this shot!
Staying on the sofa and we see the great difference between boy’s and girls, spur of the moment thrill seeking! Now it’s not to say that girls don’t posses the need to jump off sofas, because they do, it’s just boys do it with no warning at all! And girls, well they just do their best to ignore them and carry on.
Finally we head to the kitchen for some cupcake life. The reason we chose this image is the expression on Lucas’s face. Do you remember that feeling when you eat a stomach full of raw cake mix? It’s a cross between satisfaction and disbelief that this could be a real food source. We all experienced this scene in our lives and as grown ups, we all secretly desire a diet filled with raw cookie dough.
Thank you for taking the time to read what we thought about these images and we look forward to sharing more shoots and images with you again soon.
